Please mail to me at dgreenbhm@gmail.com .

Please also consider checking this blog more frequently for IEEE Region 3 Updates while our normal web site at http://ewh.ieee.org/reg/3/ is not operational.

Student Leadership Sessions Across Region 3

Region 3 Student Activities Chair Regina Hannemann reports that all four student leadership training sessions have been scheduled. Please help advertise those events. Meetings with less than 10 participants will most likely be canceled. SO please make sure students know about these and do register for it. If you are a section leader and wish to help support this activity please contact Regina .

From Regina's report:

What we will do: we will talk about the planning of the school year: What kind of events are good how to organize them how to plan for an SPAC, (what is it, how to set up an SPAC, how to build a budget etc), we will help you set goals for the upcoming year and how to find out that you actually met your goals. (Very important part as this is how you can talk to departments, college and sections and let them know that you know how to get people together and why you should receive some sponsorship for any specific event)

IEEE Day - 2 October 2012

Celebrate IEEE and its members -- our impact and support of our profession.

For the past three years, IEEE through an MGA committee has been organizing an IEEE Day calling on local student branches, sections and chapters to have IEEE activities on or near this date for the promotion and celebration of IEEE.

There is a FaceBook Page and a Google+ Page that tracks activities and where the organizers hang out.  I hope that Region 3 groups will organize, participate, and report on their IEEE Day celebrations.

Thanks to all (in advance) for your efforts and have a great IEEE Day!

IEEE Members Vote for Next Leaders

Starting today (15 August) and until 1 October, IEEE members with status of Graduate Student Member, Member, Senior Member, Fellow and Life members with the sub categories of membership may (and should) cast votes to choose the new leaders of IEEE.

Basic information and candidate information is listed on the web and it is possible to cast one's vote electronically as well.  The voting link will be active during the election cycle.

The 2013 President-Elect of IEEE (who will become president in 2014) will be chosen in this election. The Institute carried an article where the candidates responded to questions about their plans for leading the IEEE in 2014.  In addition the president-elect election, voters will choose a new leader for IEEE-USA and Technical Activities and as well as some Delegate/Director-elects for specific Divisions and Regions.  Region 3's director-elect is chosen in odd-number years.   Mary Ellen Randall is the present Region 3 Delegate/Director-Elect who will serve as Delegate/Director in 2014-2015.

Be aware that besides the vote for president, each of us potentially gets a different ballot depending on what parts of IEEE we participate in.  For example, any voting member who belongs to a society votes for the Technical Activities Vice-President Elect.  Only voting members in Region 2 vote for the Region 2 Director-elect.  While it is confusing to explain, voting members get a customized ballot when they vote on the web as well as if they vote with the paper ballot mailed to them so vote for all positions on your ballot!

Please study the candidates, discuss them with your IEEE network and then vote for the best candidates to lead the IEEE.  Please also encourage your fellow IEEE members to vote.

More IEEE Touch Points in Region 3

Over the last month or so, I have been receiving official notice of new IEEE organizational units (OUs) forming in Region 3. I am always excited to see this as it takes members being proactive about IEEE to form these units. Please join me in congratulating those who worked so hard to create these member forums and wishing each of them success in meeting the needs of themselves and their community. Please help out if possible if you get asked to support these or similar efforts.

The newly formed OUs are
  • IEEE Central Tennessee Section Chapter, IA34/PE31
  • IEEE Eastern North Carolina Section Chapter, PEL35

Expect increased postings...

Hi,

We have relied on e-mail reports a lot in Region 3 for communicating. This has worked for some and been ineffective for others. Today marks an experiment to do incremental reporting through blog posts here.

If things are set up correctly, a synopsis of this post will show up on the IEEE Region 3 Twitter Feed (r3ieee). Let me know if this is useful (or what other changes would be helpful.)

If you are a IEEE Region 3 Volunteer who would like to use this venue for sharing information, please contact me.

Welcome (back)

This blog began in 2006 and ran 2009 as an experiment in blogs. It carried some announcements and Region 3 ExCom details but it did not really catch on.

On the suggestion of one of my advisors to consider starting a blog for use in Region 3 as we move forward with our 2012 efforts, I have cleared out the old messages, converted the blog to new styling and supporting automation (mobile view, Tweet, Facebook and Google+ linkage), etc. I plan to begin posting here and inviting comments. Where we will go is not completely decided and I hope our IEEE Region 3 members and those interested in them will be part of the journey.

Happy New Year!

Dave
